Cable Wine Systems (www.cablewinesystems.com), creators of the most versatile and sophisticated wine racking system on the market, is weighing in on the trend of urban wineries.
Traditionally wineries have been located in rural settings, however as of recently, wineries are starting to pop up in more urbanized settings. Often located within larger cities, fully functioning urban wineries are growing in popularity; especially with the younger demographic of wine drinkers. “We’re seeing things happening in the wine industry that we’ve never seen before,” says Janice Bednarz, General Manager of Cable Wine Systems. “When you think of wineries, you usually envision country vineyards with expansive fields of vines stretching as far as the eye can see. And while all of those details still hold true, this generation wants the opportunity to participate in winery action closer to home.”
Currently, most urban wineries are located in relatively close proximity to traditional wineries or rural areas because the grapes needed to produce the wine are still grown on open farmland. But the urban wineries are otherwise fully functioning wineries right inside whichever city they are located.
“The demand being placed on wine right now is incredible. We’re seeing it when we install our wine racking in homes. First-time home buyers are including conditioned wine cellars or wine displays into their design and layouts from the very beginning,” says Bednarz. “It only makes sense to begin producing the wine closer to where it is being consumed.”
The trend has already begun taking shape in the U.S. In Canada, urban wineries are also making their venues into event spaces or establishments where consumers can enjoy fine dining as well. This is something that is unique to the urban winery, which has led experts to believe that urban wineries will continue to grow and prosper for many years to come.
“Traditional country wineries tend to offer consumers the opportunity to experience nature and the outdoors in their rural settings,” Bednarz concludes. “Whereas urban wineries are creating an experience unique to the city, doubling as event spaces and high end restaurants. This type of easy accessibility gives urban wineries an even more direct line to their consumers.”
