  • Cable Wine Systems Comments on the Warm Canadian Winter’s Impact on Icewine

Cable Wine Systems (www.CableWineSystems.com), creators of the most versatile and sophisticated wine racking system on the market, is reacting to the impact the warm Canadian winter is having on icewine production.
Canada is experiencing one of the warmest winters on record. That would lead some to believe that the icewine production has suffered, but the Wine Marketing Association of Ontario has reported that the production has actually been typical. (Source: Mileham, A., “Good icewine harvest in Canada, but German yields fall,” The Drinks Business web site. January 27, 2016; http://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2016/01/good-icewine-harvest-in-canada-but-german-yields-fall/.)
Though final figures have not yet been reported, wine producers notify the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) in the fall about the amount of icewine that is expected to be produced. Pillitteri Estates Winery, a Canadian distillery located in the Niagara region that distributes to the U.K., says that the icewine yield this year is greater than in 2014.
“A lot of experts would assume that icewine yields would be down due to the warm weather we’ve been experiencing in Canada and throughout most of the northeast,” says Janice Bednarz, general manager of Cable Wine Systems. “But this is good news. It’s great for wine drinkers across the country to know they’ll still be getting the same quality and amount of icewine.”
German icewine producers are looking at a yield slightly more unpredictable and only small quantities were brought in early in the winter season. However, with conditions cooling down, they are expecting the second half of the winter to be better.
“Although it’s normal for countries to compete against one another for taste and quality of wine, it’s good to see that Germany didn’t take too big of a hit with the warmer weather, as well,” Bednarz continues. “I think icewine drinkers around the world will be pleased in both cases.”

  • Cable Wine Systems Discusses Possibility of Wine in Ontario Grocery Stores in 2016

Cable Wine Systems (www.CableWineSystems.com), the creator of the most versatile and sophisticated wine racking system on the market, is discussing the possibility of wine being sold in Ontario grocery stores in 2016.
As of December 2015, six-packs of beer are sold in grocery stores. Now, Premier Kathleen Wynne is taking steps to make sales of wine inside of groceries stores possible as well. She hopes that by sometime in 2016, Ontarians will have the option to purchase wine, along with beer, when they purchase the rest of their groceries. (Source: Benzie, R., “Wynne wants wine in grocery stores in 2016,” thestar.com, December 28, 2015; http://www.thestar.com/news/queenspark/2015/12/28/wynne-wants-wine-in-grocery-stores-in-2016.html.)
“There are so many reasons to make wine more available to consumers,” says Janice Bednarz, general manager of Cable Wine Systems. “We’ve seen how the current culture has shifted its tastes towards varieties of wine. Allowing for a more open market will provide more opportunities for consumers to readily purchase the wine of their choice.”
According to Finance Minister Charles Sousa, trying to getting wine into the grocery stores isn’t a straightforward process. One of the issues is the contracts—which predate NAFTA—currently signed by Wine Rack and Wine Shop kiosks to operate inside of specified grocery stores. The government is also trying to make sure whatever deal they devise will be fair to the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario), which is where the overwhelming majority of wine and alcohol is currently sold in Ontario.
“This is going to be a bit more complex than bringing beer into the supermarkets was because of the different licences for different foreign wines held by different stores,” Bednarz continues. “But I’m hoping our government finds a way to satisfy all parties in a manner that is sensitive to the producers—both foreign and domestic—the retailers, and of course the consumers.”

  • Cable Wine Systems Comments on Andrew Peller Named Canadian Wine Producer of the Year

Cable Wine Systems (www.CableWineSystems.com), creators of the most versatile and sophisticated wine racking system on the market, is weighing in on Andrew Peller Limited being named Canadian Wine Producer of the year.
The announcement was made on November 26, 2015 at the Annual Awards Banquet held by the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London, England. Andrew Peller Limited is an Ontario-based winemaking company operating out of Grimsby, which is located in the Niagara Region. (Source: “Andrew Peller named Canadian Wine Producer of the Year,” Food in Canada, December 4, 2015; http://www.foodincanada.com/food-in-canada/andrew-peller-named-canadian-wine-producer-of-the-year-132741/.)
“It’s exciting to see the continued success of Canadian brands in the international wine community,” says Janice Bednarz, general manager of Cable Wine Systems. “Canada is managing to forge a reputation for winemaking that is extending its reach around the globe. Andrew Peller represents one of the many Canadian brands making their presence felt, though they have clearly been able to separate themselves from the bunch.”
The International Wine and Spirit Competition was the first global body to compare and award wine producers from around the world. They have grown since forming in 1969 and are now one of the premier wine competitions to exist today. Over 90 countries are represented among the panel of judges, which is comprised of sommeliers, wine buyers, Masters of Wine, and renowned journalists. The overall process takes seven months and includes multiple blind taste tests and microbiological assessments.
“It’s an extremely rigorous process,” Bednarz continues. “You’re talking about the foremost experts from around the world participating in a lengthy and detailed evaluation of some specific characteristics of wine, including region, style, and age. These people are all dedicated to the integrity of the competition and take all the steps necessary to preserve a level of trust among the wine community.”

  • Cable Wine Systems Weighs in On Growing Trend of Urban Wineries

Cable Wine Systems (www.cablewinesystems.com), creators of the most versatile and sophisticated wine racking system on the market, is weighing in on the trend of urban wineries.
Traditionally wineries have been located in rural settings, however as of recently, wineries are starting to pop up in more urbanized settings. Often located within larger cities, fully functioning urban wineries are growing in popularity; especially with the younger demographic of wine drinkers. (Source: Priestly, M., “The growth of Canada’s urban wineries,” November 11, 2015 http://www.vueweekly.com/the-growth-of-canadas-urban-wineries/)
“We’re seeing things happening in the wine industry that we’ve never seen before,” says Janice Bednarz, General Manager of Cable Wine Systems. “When you think of wineries, you usually envision country vineyards with expansive fields of vines stretching as far as the eye can see. And while all of those details still hold true, this generation wants the opportunity to participate in winery action closer to home.”
Currently, most urban wineries are located in relatively close proximity to traditional wineries or rural areas because the grapes needed to produce the wine are still grown on open farmland. But the urban wineries are otherwise fully functioning wineries right inside whichever city they are located.
“The demand being placed on wine right now is incredible. We’re seeing it when we install our wine racking in homes. First-time home buyers are including conditioned wine cellars or wine displays into their design and layouts from the very beginning,” says Bednarz. “It only makes sense to begin producing the wine closer to where it is being consumed.”
The trend has already begun taking shape in the U.S. In Canada, urban wineries are also making their venues into event spaces or establishments where consumers can enjoy fine dining as well. This is something that is unique to the urban winery, which has led experts to believe that urban wineries will continue to grow and prosper for many years to come.
“Traditional country wineries tend to offer consumers the opportunity to experience nature and the outdoors in their rural settings,” Bednarz concludes. “Whereas urban wineries are creating an experience unique to the city, doubling as event spaces and high end restaurants. This type of easy accessibility gives urban wineries an even more direct line to their consumers.”

  • Cable Wine Systems Weighs in on Research Showing Canadians Supporting Canadian Wine

Cable Wine Systems (www.CableWineSystems.com), creators of the most versatile and sophisticated wine racking system on the market, is weighing in on research showing Canadians are supporting Canadian wine.
Recent research conducted by market research company Mintel has shown that despite the interest in international wines, Canadians are displaying strong support for locally-made wine. Precise numbers indicate that 49% of Canadians prefer Canadian wines over foreign brands. (Source: “Half of Canadians support Canadian wines: Mintel research,” Food in Canada web site, November 18, 2015; http://www.foodincanada.com/food-in-canada/half-of-canadians-support-canadian-wines-mintel-research-132571/.)
“Traditionally, beer is the alcoholic beverage most associated with Canadians,” says Janice Bednarz, General Manager of Cable Wine Systems. “However, Canadians are just as proud of their wine culture, which is growing every year and has become recognized around the world.”
Less than one in three Canadians says they still prefer international wines over Canadian brands, while 30% of Canadians say smaller wineries are producing a higher quality product. In addition, when the research started analyzing regional support, the numbers showed even greater favour for those Canadian-based wineries, with 60% of local support in British Columbia and 53% in Ontario.
Red wine is still the most purchased wine in the country, with the overall annual growth of wine projected to stay around the four percent mark.
“This is actually an important study,” Bednarz concludes. “The fact that nearly half of Canadians consider the origin of the wine as the deciding factor in choosing a brand is a key takeaway from this research. And since Canadians are largely aligning with quality homegrown brands, it means they are more likely to buy national wines in the future.”

  • Cable Wine Systems Weighs in on State of Wine in Atlantic Canada Following the Atlantic Canadian Wine Awards

Cable Wine Systems (www.CableWineSystems.com), creators of the most versatile and sophisticated wine racking system on the market, is weighing in on the state of the wine industry in Atlantic Canada.
The judging for the seventh annual Atlantic Canadian Wine Awards wrapped up in early October and the consensus seems to be that Atlantic Canada is a wine region on the rise. This surge is being lead first by a culinary movement in the region, but similar to trends around the world, it’s the younger generation which is being seen taking the popularity of wine to a different level. (Source: Rankin, H., “Atlantic Canada coming into its own as wine region,” The Chronicle Herald, October 16, 2015; http://thechronicleherald.ca/artslife/1317043-pour-atlantic-canada-coming-into-its-own-as-wine-region.)
“The first places most people think of when someone mentions Canadian wine is the Niagara region or the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, and rightfully so—they’ve earned that label for producing some of the top wines in the world,” says Steve Papadimitriou, Owner of Cable Wine Systems. “But some of the attention is slowly shifting over to growers in the Atlantic regions, and events like the Atlantic Canadian Wine Awards are showing that there’s something positive happening out there.”
The goal of the Atlantic Canadian Wine Awards is to promote local growers, showcase the wine coming from the region, and raise the overall awareness of the progress of wine throughout the Atlantic region. This year’s event saw submissions for both reds and whites, dessert wines, fruit wines, and even varieties of sparkling wine, with reports indicating that whites and sparkling were the standouts, as reds are still a bit more difficult due to the region’s geography.
“It’s always a good thing to see a region step up in any facet, but to see Atlantic Canada take command of its wine culture is encouraging,” concluded Papadimitriou. “And as Cable Wine Systems helps facilitate homeowners’ love for wine with wine rack systems, our goal is to continue supporting the cultural appreciation for wine drinking that’s been happening in Atlantic Canada and all over North America.”

  • Cable Wine Systems Weighs in on Study Claiming Millennials Spend More on Wine

Cable Wine Systems (www.CableWineSystems.com), creators of a revolutionary wine racking system, is weighing in on a study claiming that Millennials spend more on a bottle of wine when compared to older demographics.
A recent report by Wine Intelligence Portrait found that younger, affluent Canadians, specifically Millennials and younger members of Generation X, are spending more money on a bottle of wine than their Canadian counterparts. The report also concluded that this younger group of affluent wine drinkers account for approximately 10% of wine drinkers in Canada, roughly 1.6 million people. (Britner, L., “Younger consumers in Canada willing to spend more on wine – research,” Just-Drinks.com, October 7, 2015; http://www.just-drinks.com/news/younger-consumers-in-canada-willing-to-spend-more-on-wine-research_id118349.aspx.)
“This report is consistent with the overall behaviour of this generation and their attitude towards wine drinking,” says Steve Papadimitriou, Owner of Cable Wine Systems. “As has often been stated recently, this generation appreciates wine and this report shows they are proving that with their wallets.”
The report further details the study, stating that on average these consumers spend 32% more per bottle, which is a significant jump from the typical consumer. This implies that this group of wine drinkers has the resources to spend that much more on a bottle of wine and they’re taking the opportunity to explore their options.
The report also groups the generation into different categories, the largest of which is what they name “Premium Brand Consumers.” This group consists of people who drink a glass of wine to relax after their day is over. The other grouping includes those who are extremely passionate about the variations of wine, dubbed by the report as “Adventurous Connoisseurs.”
“These groupings are similar to how more traditional consumers also look at wine,” Papadimitriou concludes. “Most people are either casual wine drinkers who are fairly knowledgeable but prefer drinking socially and at their home or they are real students of wine. Those are the ones who will go to tastings and tend to know much more about wine than the average consumer.”

  • Cable Wine Systems Weighs in On Blue Apron Now Delivering Wine to Homes

Cable Wine Systems (www.cablewinesystems.com), a revolutionary cable wine racking system, is weighing in on Blue Apron’s decision to now deliver wine to homes.
Another small step has been taken in the tech world by meal delivery giant Blue Apron. Already delivering food items complete with recipes to doorsteps across America, the company has decided to branch out to include bottles of wine as part of their delivery service. (Source: Lufkin, B., “Now Apron Now Shipping Wine to Your House, Making You Even Lazier,” September 21, 2015 http://gizmodo.com/blue-apron-now-ships-wine-to-your-house-making-you-eve-1732111342)
“It only makes sense,” says Steve Papadimitriou, Owner of Cable Wine Systems. “We’ve spoken before about this generation’s increased appetite for wine as opposed to any other alcoholic beverage. It’s a logical move for a company like Blue Apron to capitalize on the trend.”
With an estimated worth of approximately $2.0 billion, Blue Apron is certainly looking in the right direction to expand its enterprise. Sommeliers handpick each bottle of wine to pair with the food also being delivered.
“They’re essentially adding value to their service,” Papadimitriou continues. “Much of the new generation of wine consumers aren’t doing so absentmindedly. They have a thorough understanding of the levels of wine available. Blue Apron understands these factors and is ensuring they match the expectations of its consumers.”
Papadimitriou goes on to say that much can be made of this delivery service, but the demand for wine is present. And according to Papadimitriou, this new taste for wine is something that is much more than a passing fad.
“We build custom wine racking systems for homeowners and so we see the demand every single day. We believe it’s much more than just a trend and actually just a preference by this generation. Their taste for wine is a behaviour that’s here to stay.”

  • Cable Wine Systems Weighs in on Millennials’ Impact on Wine Industry

Cable Wine Systems (www.cablewinesystems.com), a revolutionary cable wine racking system, is weighing in on the effect Millennials are having on the wine industry.
According to a recent report in Fox News, Millennials are the fast-growing demographic among wine consumers and are having a large impact on traditional wine industry practice. (Source: Miskew, S. “5 Ways Millennials Are Changing the Wine World,” FoxNews.com, September 29, 2015; www.foxnews.com/leisure/2014/10/29/5-ways-millennials-are-changing-wine-world/)
“Wine is seeing a resurgence among Millennials and that is being reflected in a lot of the decisions being made in the wine industry,” says Steve Papadimitriou, owner of Cable Wine Systems. “Everything from the types of wine being released to the way wine is being marketed is influenced by a younger demographic.”
Sparkling sweet wines and affordable options are seeing a significant uptick in sales, with producers releasing new options targeted towards Millennials.
“Millennials typically are informed consumers and put some thought into the purchases they make,” says Papadimitriou. “They’re not as prone to splurging as baby boomers, which means that wine producers are having to increase the diversity of their selection and appeal directly to Millennials’ sensibilities.”
Papadimitriou notes that Millennials often consider a variety of factors in selecting a wine. “Similar to what the report found, we’ve seen that these consumers select wines based on more than price. They want to know detailed information and they carefully make their decisions based on that.”
This has led to social media becoming a driving force in the wine industry, with mobile apps targeted towards wine connoisseurs and online stores which use viral marketing. Through social media, the wine industry has been able to engage with this demographic.
“Not only is social media being used to engage with a younger demographic, but it’s also helping to make them more versed in wine culture,” notes Papadimitriou. “With mobile apps and social media marketing, information about wine is now right at Millennials’ fingertips.”
With social media, Millennials aren’t just learning about wine, but are also trading recommendations and engaging in online discussions.
“Social media has been one of the biggest marketing factors for our company,” says Papadimitriou. “After word-of-mouth, it has been our website and social media profiles that generate the most interest for our wine-racking systems. These are the tools Millennials use to communicate now, so anyone who wants to engage with them has to be part of the online conversation.”

  • Cable Wine Systems Comments on Wine Shower Trend in Pre-Wedding Festivities

Cable Wine Systems (www.cablewinesystems.com), a revolutionary cable wine racking system, is commenting on the increasingly popular wine shower trend in pre-wedding festivities.
Bridal showers have long been a staple for brides as a pre-wedding celebration leading up to the big day. Traditionally, female friends and family of the bride would gather together to present the bride with a variety of gifts that would help to furnish the new home she and her soon-to-be husband would live in after the wedding. These days however, with many couples already living together for months or even years before marriage, the need for typical household items is often no longer a necessity. As a result, some brides are finding more unique ways to celebrate, such as choosing to have a Wine Shower instead.
“Wine showers are an extension of how this generation is choosing to do things differently,” says Steve Papadimitriou, owner of Cable Wine Systems. “Brides-to-be are saying that they would rather not follow tradition of receiving household items that they often already own. This is a strong indication of just how much this generation actually appreciates their wine.”
The goal of the wine shower is to help couples establish a collection of quality wines that have special meaning or purpose, which is often a result of what they are or where they’ve come from. They are not only an inexpensive way of introducing the bride and groom to new varieties and vintages of wine, but they are also a way for more experienced wine drinkers to educate beginners. (Source: How to host a wine tasting for a bridal shower,” TopWeddingSites.com; http://www.topweddingsites.com/wedding-blog/pre-wedding-parties/bridal-showers/a-matter-of-taste-how-to-host-a-wine-tasting-for-a-bridal-shower, last accessed September 14, 2015.)
“Wine Showers also offer friends and family the opportunity to attach a story to the bottle of wine they are giving,” explains Papadimitriou. “What better way for a young couple to learn about different wine varieties than to read all the reasons why people enjoy a particular brand or vintage of wine?”
In line with this shift, it should also be noted that many newer high end housing developments have added a wine cellar option as yet another possible feature for couples to choose from when buying and designing their new home.
“Back in the day, most young people would never even dream of putting a wine cellar in their first home,” Papadimitriou concludes. “But this and future generations will likely look at them as just another potential room or feature in their home; similar to a home theatre or gym.”
